Soaking up these sunny Carolina days with the newest release from @southerndistilling a 108 proof bourbon finished in Zinfandel casks. This one brings notes of red gummy bears and grape soda on the nose followed by strawberry jam and tannic oak on the palate with a white pepper and black currant finish. If you’ve never been to @bourbon_classic then this is your chance to see what the night events are really about. The first night, Cocktail & Culinary Challenge, paired 18 local chefs with master bartenders from local distilleries to create a small plate and cocktail collaboration. At the end of the night, the awards are given for both people’s choice and judges choices. The second night, TASTE, starts with your choice of 1 of 6 “Bourbon University” classes followed by pre-event lobby libations. Once the event begins, there are over 35 distilleries represented with multiple offerings to taste through. There is also the option to add VIP tickets to both nights that provide additional small plates and speciality pours. I have been lucky enough to attend this event for the last 4 years and it is honestly one I look forward to every year. There is definitely something for everyone! This Wake Robin rye is a blend of 2 different rye mashbills aged at least 4 years and comes in at 92 proof. It’s a solid pour with notes of pineapple, cherry gummies, and cardamom spice. While it’s a shorter finish than I’d prefer, they’ve done a good job with this release and I’m excited to see them continue to grow. This 11 yr, 11 month age stated, 120.4 proof rye gives notes of cherry laffy taffy and butterscotch on the nose followed by strawberry, almond croissants, and baked apples on the palate, and banana nut bread, dried apricot, and anise on the finish. This is definitely a Kentucky style rye in my opinion that stays true to the @heavenhilldistillery nutty profile. I’m honestly still unsure what table syrup means 😂 but I will say if you enjoy a slightly sweeter, fruit forward rye it’s definitely one to check out!
